Freshwater Diving in Lake Malawi

Top Dive Sites
Among the lakeâs best dive spots, Thumbi West Island stands out for its granite boulders and dense swarms of colorful cichlids, making it a favorite for beginners and underwater photographers. Mumbo Island offers crystal-clear water, dramatic rock formations, and a peaceful, remote setting â perfect for relaxed diving and snorkeling. For more adventurous divers, Domwe Island features steep drop-offs, caves, and excellent opportunities for night dives.
Who to dive with?
The most established dive centers are located in Cape Maclear and Nkhata Bay. In Cape Maclear, Cape Maclear Scuba offers PADI courses and guided fun dives. On the northern side of the lake, Aqua Africa in Nkhata Bay is known for its relaxed atmosphere and knowledgeable instructors. Most dive shops provide full gear rental, and many operate in conjunction with eco-lodges or backpacker hostels.
Access & Practical Information
You can reach Lake Malawi via international flights to Lilongwe or Blantyre in Malawi. From there, minibus transfers or domestic flights will get you to lakeside towns such as Cape Maclear, Monkey Bay, or Nkhata Bay. Roads can be rough, so travel time can vary.
Diving is possible year-round, but visibility is best from August to December. Water temperatures range from 24°C to 29°C, and since it's freshwater, youâll need slightly more weight than for saltwater diving. Bilharzia is present in some areas of the lake, so make sure you follow local advice regarding where itâs safe to swim. Most dive centers offer safe zones and facilities with proper hygiene.
